IN MEMORIAM

Peggy Mellon Hitchcock, founder of Arizona Friends of Tibet and fearless advocate for Tibetan causes since the 1960s, died April 9, 2024 at age 90. Peggy was instrumental in bringing The Dalai Lama to Tucson for teachings in 1993 and 2005. AFOT has given well over $200,000 in grants since its founding in 1991. Peggy remained deeply involved with AFOT until the last weeks of her life. We will dearly miss her, but we are dedicated to continuing Peggy’s tireless work on behalf of Tibetan orphans, monks, nuns, elders, and Tibetan causes. Read more about Peggy and AFOT in her essay “Looking Back, Looking Forward”.

“My religion is kindness.”
― His Holiness the Dalai Lama

At Arizona Friends of Tibet, we practice The Dalai Lama’s Religion of Kindness through Taking Action.

We carefully select organizations worldwide and award grants for the food, housing, educational and spiritual needs of monks, nuns, children and elders. We also support the preservation of Tibetan Buddhist culture and translation of ancient texts. This year we have provided lifesaving support during the Corona virus pandemic, and we have funded COVID-19 research. We have also supported Tibetan Buddhist centers in Ukraine and Poland that are providing humanitarian aid to Ukrainian refugees.

OUR RECENT GRANTS – INFORMATION AND PHOTOS

We sponsor teachings, lectures, movies, sand mandala creations, and other events to provide access to Tibetan Buddhist practice, philosophy and culture. Arizona Friends of Tibet cohosted teachings in Tucson by His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 1993 and 2005, and we provided initial seed funding for the Center for Compassion Studies at University of Arizona.

For more about who we are and what we do, please read “Looking Back, Looking Forward” by our founder and President Emerita, Peggy Hitchcock.
